St. James - Assiniboia

St. James-Assiniboia is a large community in the western section of Winnipeg. It is usually referred to as simply "St. James" and consists of the neighbourhoods of Old St. James, Deer Lodge, Silver Heights, Birchwood, Sturgeon Creek, Woodhaven, Heritage Park, Kirkfield Park, Westwood, Crestview, St. Charles. Prices in these areas range an average sale price of $55,000 to $549,900  Although Brooklands is a part of St. James, few people think of it as such, it is more often considered a part of the West End of Winnipeg.  Homes in the Brooklands area range an average sale price of $28,100 to $202,345.   A new addition to this area is The Oaks, which runs along the Assiniboine river.  Prices in The Oaks range from an average sale price of $525,000 to $1,000,000 plus.

It is primarily residential, but there is some industrial development in the Murray Industrial Park in the north central part of the neighbourhood and near the Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport which is located in St. James. There is substantial commercial development along Portage Avenue, the area's main thoroughfare, and near the western edge of the community near the Perimeter Highway, where the Unicity Shopping Mall once stood. St. James lies immediately west of the Polo Park area, Winnipeg's largest retailing district.

Schools

This area is managed by the St James Assiniboine School Division, and has 9 elementary and 4 secondary schools. There is also one public library in the neighbourhood. There is good access to Red River Community College to the North and University of Winnipeg to the east. Access to the University of Manitoba is via Kenaston to the south.

Recreation

The area is rich in recreation, with Bourkevale Park to the east, Assiniboine Golf Club bordering on the airport, Living Prairie Museum/Park to the west, and Assiniboine Park accessed by pedestrian bridge across the Assiniboine River. The area has 2 movie theatres (including the CFB base), 4 outdoor rinks, 2 indoor ice arenas, 4 tennis courts, 2 indoor pools, 1 outdoor pool, 2 running tracks, and Assiniboine Park and Assiniboine Zoo just across the River. The community is also home to Grant’s Old Mill Museum, Air Force Heritage Park, and the Western Canada Aviation Museum.
