St. Norbert

St. Norbert is a heavily bilingual (French and English) neighbourhood in the southernmost part of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. It began as a Métis settlement dating back to 1822. It was in St. Norbert, on October 19, 1869, that a public meeting was held at St. Norbert Roman Catholic Church. At that meeting, the Métis elected the Comite national des Métis with Louis Riel as secretary. The first act of the Committee was an erection of a barrier across the Pembina Trail to keep out unwanted emissaries of the Canadian Government.

Located just south of the Perimeter Highway, St. Norbert is home to the ruins of a Trappist Monastery, Our Lady of the Prairies. It also hosts the St. Norbert Farmers' Market every summer, drawing large crowds from South Winnipeg. Other attractions include the St. Norbert Provincial Heritage Park, and the Red River Flood Gates

Today, St. Norbert is the southern gateway into the city of Winnipeg.

This area is benefiting from the southward expansion of the city, though some riverfront homes are prone to seasonal flooding. St Norbert housing includes townhomes, duplexes and single family dwellings, and the average sale price for a single family dwelling is $218,000.

Schools

St Norbert is part of the Seine River School Division, and has an elementary, a middle and a secondary school.

Shopping

The community has Grandmont Plaza, just south of the Perimeter highway and other small shops and services along Route 75 (Pembina Highway, south of the Perimeter). The nearest larger mall is at Pembina Village and Pembina Crossing, north of Pembina, straddling Bishop Grandin Blvd.

Recreation

St Norbert is mainly rural in nature, being on the outer southern fringe of Winnipeg. The community has a recreation centre, with tennis, and an outdoor rink. Across the Perimeter Highway is an outdoor pool. For movies, head to Pembina Crossing, where there is a multiplex cinema.
